Developmental Editing

I holistically evaluate your manuscript’s argument, evidence, structure, and tone, providing supportive feedback on the strengths and challenges of your work. You will receive a comprehensive written summary of my advice and concrete suggestions for moving forward. Copyediting is not included, but it can be added as a separate service when appropriate.

Price: $140 per hour.

The fine print

I use Chicago, APA, or publisher style guides.

For copyediting jobs, I complete a sample edit of the document (500 to 1000 words) prior to signing an agreement. A sample copyedit helps estimate a turnaround time and determines if light or heavy copyediting is needed.

For developmental editing jobs, we’ll start with a conversation about your project and editorial needs. During this conversation, we will talk about estimated turnaround time and cost. I can work with you to determine what level of feedback makes most sense for your project and your budget.

Individual clients pay a 25% deposit prior to the start of work. I also accept institutional work and will communicate directly with administrative staff to set up payment.

About Hannah Covert

During my 25-year career in higher education, I spent a lot of time writing and editing—journal articles, grant proposals, reports, protocols, web copy, and more. Now, as the owner of Covert Copyediting, I use my skills and experience to provide high-quality editing services.

I served as a faculty researcher and administrator at three research-intensive universities in the fields of environmental public health and Latin American studies. I have authored more than 40 scholarly journal articles and was co-principal investigator of 25 grant-funded research and capacity building projects.

As a senior editor of a qualitative research journal, I have supported dozens of authors from around the world to develop and publish their articles.

I am insatiably curious and great with details. I specialize in public health, environment, and social sciences, but I gladly edit a range of topics. I’m comfortable with qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods approaches.

I completed a certificate in Copyediting through the University of California San Diego. I earned my PhD in Higher Education Administration and my MA in Latin American Studies at the University of Florida. My BA in Spanish is from Middlebury College.

Some of my favorite things in life are my family, chocolate, traveling, and native plants.
